Application process for Odisha Common PG Entrance Test likely to start in a week - Times of India

BHUBANESWAR: The higher education department is likely to start the application process for Common PG Entrance Test within a week. The department will conduct this test for the first time in the state. Students will appear a common entrance test for admission into PG courses in state public universities and autonomous colleges.

“Advertisement inviting applications from students for Common PG Entrance Test is expected to be published within a week. The application process is already delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic situation,” said Asoka Kumar Das, vice chairman of Odisha State Higher Education Council.

In April, higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo had discussed with vice-chancellors of the state public universities about holding the test. Another meeting was held recently to finalize the process before publication of advertisement inviting applications for the entrance test.

Sources said final semester/year undergraduate (UG) students can apply for the test. Result of final semester examination will not be needed to apply or sit for the entrance test. The results of final year examination will be required while preparing merit list or rank for admission into the PG courses.

“The department is planning to give a seven-day window period to students before the publication of merit list for filling up of results of final semester/year examinations. Merit list will be prepared by taking 30 points of career marking and 70 points of the entrance test marks,” said a higher education department officer.

Though the date of the entrance test is yet to be decided, department is planning to do it after reviewing the Covid-19 situation in the state. The test depends on the verdict of Supreme Court hearing pleas against the University Grants Commission (UGC) decision on conducting the final year university examinations by September 30. Hearing of the case has been adjourned till August 10.

On June 11, the state government had cancelled final semester examinations of the UG and PG students and applied alternative method of evaluation for publication of final results. But the UGC’s July 6 revised guidelines asked the universities to hold the examinations by September 30. Odisha government has also requested the Centre not to make the UG and PG final semester examinations mandatory. This has created a confusion whether the examination will be conducted or not. Because of this, date of Common PG Entrance Test is not decided so far.

The common entrance test will bring all universities to a single platform and students will fill a single form and sit for one entrance test for all state universities. After appearing this one test, students will get a seat in any of the state universities according to his/her eligibility and entrance performance.

Presently, a student has to submit application forms separately for each university and appear for multiple entrance examinations at different dates. It was hectic and tedious. But this system will save the students from applying and appearing for entrance tests separately for different universities.
